We went to Lake Chabot Regional Park on Sunday and did a little hiking with the kids. I've decided I want our family to be more active, so every few weeks we are going to pick an area within driving distance to explore. This will not only get us active, but the kids will learn more about the area we live in. Lake Chabot is a small watershed in Castro Valley, which is in the hills just south of Oakland. It's reserved for drinking water so you can't actually go in the lake, but apparently you can fish and use non motorized boats. First we stopped at the small park and had lunch and let the kids swing. After that we hiked from the park to the lake, then back. We didn't go very far, but it sure felt like it because not only did I have Gabe on my back, it was mostly uphill. We took the very nice paved trail that had little signs every once in a while telling you about the area. It was very interesting reading about the Chinese Laborers who built the dam and lived in the labor camp there.
I think next time we will explore Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore, at least there we can actually go in the water.

That sounds and looks like a very nice place, and a good way to get exercise while enjoying Mother nature with the family.
